We have been sitting on the studio version of the Big big big da balls song since around episode 10. It didn't fit on the season 1 soundtrack so we decided to just release it separately on the web. To make the release of the song more fun we decided to have a video contest. It's time for the fans to grab a camera and make a music video for "Big big big da balls"!

1) No showing your balls or any other scroti.
2) Videos are submitted by creating a thread in the video contest forums.
3) Contest entries must be posted before Friday Oct. 19th 5pm EST.

The video can include lip syncing along to the song, or not... really, it can be whatever visual interpretation comes to your mind. Forum users will vote to determine the winner.

Pure Pwnage will be attending the Toronto Fan Expo on August 24th through 26th. Geoff, Miranda, and I will be around and signing autographs periodically throughout the weekend, and with luck we may be able to persuade Dave into making an appearance when he arrives with our lunch. We'll also be involved in a panel discussion humbly titled "Sci-Fi Superstars of the Internet" on Friday at 8:00pm in room 715B, which is in the SFX section of the expo.

It should come as no surprise that I have a passionate interest in competitive gaming, so this year's expo is extra exciting for me as it's playing host to two big competitive gaming events - the WCG Canadian Finals and the WSVG Toronto tour stop. Not only have we got our booth in the WCG area, but rumor has it I'll even be emceeing a few of the events. I hope they know what they're getting into.

Wii tournament at the Toronto show

We had such an amazing response from the casting call that we decided to give away another chance to be in the show. There will be a short Wii tournament at the episode 14 screening in Toronto and the first place prize will include an appearance in Pure Pwnage. This will be a small part and open to all attendees, even those from outside of Toronto. We will have the Wii hooked up to the big screen at the Bloor Cinema so that everyone can see the action! The finalists will get to play teh_pwnerer himself. There will also be door prizes for those that pre-ordered their tickets online, so there are plenty of opportunities to win noobstore gear!

Sketchersons, casting for PP, Xfire

Our good buddies in the Toronto-based comedy troupe The Sketchersons are doing a big show in Los Angeles this weekend. You may recognize some of them from their roles in Pure Pwnage. They are a very funny group of people and we highly recommend you check out their show if you are in the area.

Speaking of roles in Pure Pwnage, we need an actor for a part in the upcoming episode and we thought hey, why not put a casting call on the main page?! We have had fans in the show before and it has always turned out to be a positive experience. For this role you don't have to say much so no acting experience is required. We are looking for a male age 15-20. To apply send an email to with an attached photo of yourself, your height, and a few sentences on why you want to be in the show. YOU MUST LIVE IN THE TORONTO AREA and be available to film in downtown Toronto during the next few weeks. We will try to schedule a time that suits everyone, it should only be 1 or 2 days shooting and a few hours each day.

Man saves security guard, video games credited for heroics.

I had intended for my inaugural blog post to be about my childlike giddiness for StarCraft 2, but instead it's going to be about 24 year-old Adam Mapleson, who on Saturday night was shot in the chest while coming to the aid of security guards during a robbery in the UK.

I'll be honest - I'm not much of a general "news" kind of guy. Oddly enough, reading about tragedy and injustice sort of bums me out. But in this case the image of the man who was shot grabbed my attention and made my heart fucking drop - he was wearing a Pure Pwnage hat. Immediately I re-read the headline and image caption, admittedly slightly panicked at the idea that I may have misinterpreted it and some Pure Pwnage fan had gone out and shot up a mall or something crazy that Jack Thompson would inevitably blame on my monitor humping adventures. Thankfully, the gamer in this case was the hero.

I'm no journalist, so I'm not going to tell you the story. You can read about it here or here. I'm posting about this because nowhere have I read, nor would I ever expect to read, a headline such as: "Man saves security guard, video games credited for heroics". Yet somehow if the situation were different, and Adam had instead been some ball-less video-gaming metal-listening commuter-shooting robber, someone would be up this story's ass in a Nintendo-second with claims equally as absurd - I'd bet my original gold Legend of Zelda NES cartridge on it. "Completely insane fucker shoots people, video games obviously at fault...... lack of frontal lobe was not a factor, says local moron". Both perspectives are ridiculous but only one gets printed regularly, so I'm here to help balance that out. I'll save the whole "art influences" tirade for its own blog post.

Of course, video games don't actually have anything to do with what happened. It's one thing to fantasize about being a hero and another entirely to make a heroic split-second decision in real life. Adam didn't intervene because he has mad headshotting skillz in CS 1.6, or because he has good taste in music. He did what he did because ~~of Pure Pwnage~~ he's genuinely a good person. Adam, you pwn RL. The cast and crew of Pure Pwnage, along with our entire community, are wishing you the speediest of recoveries.

Mega site update

As always, our hero Nuno Teixeira of webtertainment.tv was gracious enough to help us out with a website redesign. Nuno is a great guy to work with, we send him an email talking about changing the website and he immediately starts working late into the night and within a few days we are ready to launch the new site. With this new design the important news items can be independent of the blog portion allowing us to update more frequently. Thanks Nuno, you are a hero.

After a long series of manufacturing and customs headaches, the DVDs are now shipping! We have been looking forward to spreading the pwnage in DVD quality for some time now. The DVD also contains plenty of funny behind the scenes footage that we've had to sit on until now since we couldn't release anything out of character while the show was uncredited.

Check out the new noobstore, it is now de-noobified and with increased functionality (you don't have to wear out your scroll wheel to see all of the products).

The PP soundtrack is now on iTunes.
I hope to see people with their iPod's rockin out on the street playing air guitar to "I feel like pwning noobs".

We are very pleased to announce the premiere of Episode 14. A second INTERNATIONAL screening date will be announced very soon, we are just awaiting final confirmation. A note about the Toronto show, we will be doing our best this time to take care of the lineup issues. We plan to have systems in place that wont result in a massive zerg rush once the theatre doors open. We have reached a critical mass in attendance where the honor system doesn't work and as such we will be moving to a new cattle prod based system.

With only 14 days to go before the first screening of episode 12, I thought I should address a few noobschoolbus questions regarding the premieres:

OMG WHY CALGARY 1ST??!!?

Calgary is the hometown of most of the cast & crew. This will be the first time we reveal our real names and who we really are. We thought it would be great to do this in front of our many friends and family there. The Calgary theatre is also the smallest of the three venues at just half the size of the Vancouver and Toronto theatres. This will provide a more intimate and personal world premiere to unveil not only ourselves but the season 1 finale of Pure Pwnage!

What will be happening at the premieres?!

Aside from the screening of episodes 10, 11 and 12 in full DVD quality, we will have contests to win Noobstore gear and for the first time ever there will be an out-of-character meet and greet with the cast!

What happens if I dress up like Jeremy or Doug or Tagi?!

You might find some special opportunities opening up for you...

Tickets for the screenings are available online until October 26th or at the door. We recommend buying tickets online to guarantee seating. These will be events that no fan will want to miss!

A lot of people have been asking me about the Frostmane WoW guild... I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get to 60 but i'm in my 50s right now and hopefully soon we will be able to announce the signing the official Pure Pwnage guild charter If you are currently playing on Frostmane you can still play with other PP fans in one of the unofficial "waiting guilds".

Pure Pwnage WoW guild

A few months from now we are going to be starting a PP WoW guild. It will be an Alliance guild on Frostmane, so if you think you are uber enough play with us you should start leveling your char. The guild will be exclusive - applicants must meet the following critera:

- Must be Level 60, attuned to MC and BWL
- Have experience raiding MC / BWL / AQ40
- Must be interested in PvP

Our raiding times will be evenings EST. More details regarding the application process will be given at a later date.

The cast of Pure Pwnage will be leading the guild. Kyle and a few others already have characters on the Frostmane server. Maybe in a few months I'll be able to convince Jeremy to start playing again, it should only take him a few days to get to 60.

The infancy of Internet television

It has been almost 2 years since the show started and I have to say that we are very pleased with how much the show has grown. In May 2004, I recall that Jeremy and I were very excited to see that 800 people had downloaded episode 1 of Pure Pwnage. Our latest release, Episode 10, was downloaded 597,893 times in the first 24 hours (that's not counting unofficial mirrors and downloads via BitTorrent). Our primary mirror, agsn.ca, transferred 135 Terabytes of data on the release day, with a peak transfer rate of 22 gigs/sec. After a brief outage, the technicians at speakeasy.net (our web host) also managed to cope with the massive influx of traffic. Thirty days after the release, we expect to have tracked over 3 million downloads - that's more viewers than the majority of Canadian television shows, and we are not even on TV! Our fanbase is continually growing and we don't know where it is going to stop.

To become a film-maker has been a dream of mine for a long time, but as everyone knows it's not usually a good thing to bank on developing a "rock star" type career (rock star = low probability of success but lucrative and fun). Entering the film business by traditional means requires a lot of hard work, dedication, networking, luck, blah, blah, etc. It's hard. Today there are two main reasons why it is a lot easier for independent artists to develop their careers in film/TV:

1) Digital video equipment is cheap, easy to use, and accessible.
2) The Internet exists.

There is no better place for independent media than the Internet. Not only because the audience is global but also because word of mouth is an incredible force on the internet. There are many ways to forward a link to your friends and it's very easy for media to go "viral". Pure Pwnage has grown from 800 downloads of the initial episode to millions of downloads exclusively by word of mouth.

But even with millions of viewers, it doesn't mean you have a career. As Internet broadcasters, we have found that we suffer from a lack of legitimacy. For example, even though we are among the most watched Canadian television shows, we are not eligible to apply to the funding sources that are the financial backbone of the Canadian television industry. Funds like the Canadian Television Fund give away millions of dollars for the production of shows that i'm sure most of you have never heard of.

Not being eligible for funding, we had to borrow a camera from the University of Toronto library to shoot our first episode.

Advertisers are generally uninterested when it comes to Pure Pwnage, though they spend tens of thousands of dollars on print advertising in publications with 1/10th our audience and even more on television commercial spots during shows that have a fraction of our viewership. We don't want to start charging viewers to download our episodes, therefore merchandising is the only way we generate income.

An interesting note on the lack of legitimacy: Even some web-savvy individuals do not see any significance in pioneering web broadcasting. The Pure Pwnage wikipedia article is periodically nominated for deletion because our website is either "vanity" or "non-notable"

Still, I am optimistic about the future of Internet broadcasting as I read more and more articles like this. It seems some of the big broadcasters are starting to get the idea that people watch videos downloaded from the Internet. Have you heard about this??!?!

So, if you are a Pure Pwnage fan keep watching the show - we have big plans. If you want to be a film-maker - go out, grab a camera and start making your show.

The Internet television revolution is here. Your grandchildren are going to be amazed that you used to have to wait until a specific time for a show to be aired. They will also get a laugh when you add that you were unable to choose the episode that you wanted to see. So a big thanks to all the fans, you have helped us get to where we are. You have made it possible for us to share our laughs with the world.
